Power out: protect the cold you already have

  1. Write the outage start time. Do not rely on memory later.
  2. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Use shelf-stable food instead.
  3. Use the conditional windows. About 4 hours for a closed refrigerator, about 48 hours for a full closed freezer and 24 hours for a half-full closed freezer.
  4. Move refrigerated perishables only if you can hold 40°F or below. A cooler without enough ice does not stop the clock.
